I recently bought myself a bottle of the Fenspirits Aurora Gin – it is their version of the trending colour-changing gins that we’re seeing so many of.
Aurora Gin is Fenspirits’ classic London Dry Gin infused with flowers to change it from a blue infusion to a delicate blush pink when served with tonic.
I didn’t want to stop at tonic though! I was intrigued to see what effects we’d get using the gin in three classic cocktails:
Elderflower Collins
The Elderflower Collins is a perfect Spring into Summer cocktail and with the Aurora Gin it turns a pretty lilac-pink shade.
2oz (60ml) London Dry Gin
0.75oz (22.5ml) Elderflower Liqueur, such as St Germain
1oz (30ml) lemon juice
Soda water
Lemon twist or sprig of elderflowers or gypsophilia
In a Collins glass or highball filled with ice, add the gin, elderflower liqueur and lemon juice – give it a stir, then top up with soda water.
Garnish with the lemon twist or the flowers and add a couple of straws – I like the decorative paper straws from the Paper Straw Party Shop.
Classic Gin Martini
The Aurora Gin brings a fabulous purple hue to one of my ultimate favourites – the Classic Gin Martini.
2.5-3oz (75-90ml) gin
0.5oz (15ml) dry vermouth – I like Sacred Spirits English Dry Vermouth
Dash of orange bitters – I’m currently using bitters from The Bitter Truth
Lemon twist to garnish
Shake all ingredients except the garnish with ice and strain into a cocktail glass – garnish with a lemon twist, or an olive if you prefer.
Gin Alexander
The colour change in an Alexander is quite subtle – it gives a very gentle turquoise shade, almost pearlescent, very difficult to capture on camera!
1.5oz (45ml) gin
0.75oz (22.5ml) white crème de cacao
0.75oz (22.5ml) single cream
0.33oz (10ml) egg white
Rose petals, grated nutmeg or gated chocolate for garnish
Shake everything except the garnish with ice and strain into a cocktail glass – add a garnish of your preference, I like the rose petals from The Zest Co.
